June 14 2002

Indianapolis, IN

On June 14 2002 Paul and his partner were one of six two-person teams to attempt the last dive scenario of an Advanced Open Water class for his Indianapolis Fire Department dive team. Paul made two circles and gave two tugs on the line to indicate to his partner that he had found the buoys attached to the cinder block they were assigned to locate. Each was wearing a full face mask with comm. gear but Paul’s communications were not working properly. He could hear but could not send transmissions

During the evolution, something happened and unable to communicate his emergency, Paul tried to take the mask from his buddy. Before his partnet could react, Paul released his own weight belt in an apparent effort to go to the surface and all contact with him was lost.

It took two hours to find him.
